Apple generally releases products months before they arrive, so it’s safe to assume this headset will debut sometime in 2023.

According to rumors, the headset will feature more than a dozen cameras for tracking hand movements and gestures as one method of control. It will also reportedly support FaceTime with lifelike avatars based on facial and body features captured by the camera system.


An augmented reality headset requires a camera to see the user’s environment in a virtual world. An Apple patent from 2008 describes a simple design for a headset frame augmented reality headset that would include adjustable optical modules lined up with the wearer’s eyes. This would project images onto a clear display worn over the head, similar to glasses. The headset would connect to a handheld video player or iPod to provide processing power.

The headset will have a number of cameras inside to track hand gestures and the wearer’s surroundings.
